Redundant

If I could change one word within the ‘employment dictionary’ it would be this word.

I have thought what could be used in its place, and to be honest I cannot come up with another word.

So I have concluded I am overthinking and placing this word negatively in my head. I have discovered I am personalising the word redundant.

Ironically given my work experience in HR and coaching, I should know better.

If you are at risk of redundancy right now, I feel your pain. On the positive side there are steps you can take which will help you and your family get through this. I have worked with many people who have faced redundancy. I have also experienced it and hand on heart all of these experiences have taught me so much that one simple blog post will not cover it. I could write a book on it!

The five steps I am providing are in thoughts and actions to anyone facing the prospect of redundancy:

1. A role is made redundant not you! This is not a personal choice by your employer. Remove the personalisation, if it keeps creeping into your head, tell it to ‘go away!’

2. Talk to someone you trust about how you feel, if you do not feel comfortable about doing this, write it down somewhere, unload it.

3. Today plan in time to update your CV/Resume, (keep it to two pages), talk to agencies, recruiters and look at recruitment websites. Do this for 30 minutes at a time and take a break.

4. Discover what parts of your job you love and look out for these in your search for a new role.

5. Think of this as an OPPORTUNITY, at this present moment you may feel that opportunities are much smaller than they were. That’s OK! You may need time to see this change as an OPPORTUNITY.

Anytime in my career, when I have had an upsetting upheaval (of which there have been many!) I have come out stronger, in mind and spirit and it worked out better for my family too.

So, I now have reframed the word Redundant as OPPORTUNITY.
